47,000 m² of parking space in Carlsberg City

Robust flooring solutions for parking basements in one of Denmark’s largest urban development projects

Short introduction

After the brewery closed in 2008, the former brewery site in Copenhagen was gradually transformed into the new district of Carlsbergbyen. Construction has taken place in several phases since the early 2010s, with the area being developed to include housing, workplaces and educational institutions.

Below ground, a number of large parking basements play an important role in the district’s infrastructure. Our long-standing partner Areo A/S contributed by installing flooring solutions in several of the projects – in total, more than 47,000 m² of Deckshield ID were installed in the parking basements of Carlsbergbyen.

Flooring solutions in the parking basements of Carlsbergbyen

Carlsbergbyen in Copenhagen is one of the most significant urban development projects in Denmark in recent years. Over the past few years, the former brewery site has been developed with housing, offices, educational institutions and public spaces – and underground, an extensive network of parking basements that form an important part of the district’s infrastructure.

In several of the buildings, flooring systems were installed in parking basements, ramps and associated areas such as bicycle parking rooms and technical rooms.

Working in large parking basements

The work included surface preparation of the concrete, installation of durable coatings in parking areas and ramps, as well as the application of markings to ensure clear orientation in the basements. Flowcrete’s parking system Deckshield ID was used for the floors – a system developed for parking basements with high traffic and requirements for both durability and slip resistance.

The work was carried out in large basement areas where many trades were working simultaneously. This required careful planning and coordination between contractors, consultants and installation teams.

“Carlsbergbyen was a complex project with many stakeholders and limited space on the construction site. This placed high demands on planning and coordination between all parties,” says Oliver Svenningsen, responsible for estimating and sales of bridge deck membranes and parking systems at Areo.

Experience from several construction plots

The work was carried out across several construction plots in Carlsbergbyen, where flooring systems were installed for parking areas, ramps, bicycle parking rooms and technical rooms. In total, the projects covered more than 47,000 m² of flooring with Deckshield ID.

The projects were completed in several phases and in different types of basements with varying functions and levels of traffic. What they had in common was the need for robust solutions capable of withstanding daily vehicle traffic while also ensuring a safe and easy-to-navigate environment for users.

“In parking basements, floors are exposed to traffic, water and de-icing salts. Therefore, it is important to choose a solution that both protects the concrete and can withstand the load for many years,” says Oliver Svenningsen.

The parking basement at the European School

One of the projects was the parking basement at the European School in Carlsbergbyen.
The basement was constructed on several underground levels with different functions and zones. This required careful planning and execution to ensure that each area received the correct coatings and markings.

The result is a parking facility with clear traffic lines and zones, making it easy for both drivers and users of the bicycle parking to navigate.

“When working in parking basements of this scale, it is not only about the technical installation but also about creating a functional facility where traffic can move safely,” explains Svenningsen.

Efficient execution on a busy construction site

Work in Carlsbergbyen also placed demands on logistics. The construction site is located in the middle of the city, and space for materials and equipment can at times be limited.

To improve efficiency, pumping equipment was used to apply materials in the basements. This made it possible to work more efficiently while ensuring a consistent installation of the flooring systems.

A strong reference

The projects in Carlsbergbyen placed high demands on quality, coordination and execution and today serve as an important reference for flooring solutions in parking basements within large urban development projects.

The experience gained from Carlsbergbyen has also strengthened Areo’s position as a specialist in flooring solutions for parking basements and other demanding environments in modern construction.
